May Reading Slump --- Help!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm in an official reading slump. I think all the excitement about our move, and now the last 10 days settling in, has sent me in a bit of a funk. All I really want to do is nap (like Freckles), sit in front of the "boob tube" (something I rarely do) or, make lists of things we still need to do.

But, I am having some fun. Yesterday my husband and I went out for lunch and did a little shopping. We ordered some custom bar stools for out new kitchen, brought home (2) new lamps which look great, and ordered another lamp which should be in soon. I joined the Friends of the Library in our new Town and will be helping at an upcoming book sale --- now any book lover would find that fun right??

But back to my reading slump ----maybe unpacking 500++ books turned me off books for good??? I hope not!!!! I did start a good book several days ago, but it seems I only read a chapter on 2 and turn off the lights. Any suggestions?? More Prozac?? What helped you out of your funk/reading slump in the past? I'm desperate!

  1. Sorry about your slump. I went through a really bad one last year (my first and I hope my last). If it is a short one, maybe you just needed a little reading break. I went for months without reading a book and I still don't know exactly why. I think it may have had something to do with not having any balance in the books I was reading (too much depressing non-fiction). Reading funny books broke me out of my slump...I read a lot of Wodehouse. So far, so good this year and I am making sure to mix in a lot of fiction and branching out to other new-to-me genres. I hope you recover from your slump soon:)

  2. Funny how moving makes you think about your books in a whole other light!

We all go through reading slumps. I'm sure some of it is just plain mental exhaustion from moving and making decisions and discovering your new town.

  3. I'm just coming out of a slump as well. Usually when I have a really bad slump, I read something light and easy. Or sometimes I reread an old favorite. But like the other's said, it's normal. Maybe it's just time to have a little mini-bread. You'll come out of it soon!

  4. Hey, sometimes you just need a break and there is no need to feel bad or be concerned about it. Moving is hard work and takes an emotional toll too.

And I would agree that it might be best to start back, when you do, with more light fare

  5. I am sure that this too shall pass. In the meantime, how about some short stories or essays? I always find that at least I can get some feeling of accomplishment by finishing the reading of something!

Your cat looks like mine. I featured mine in my current blog post, the first post in days that was not about my new grandson!

As you can imagine, I am not doing much reading either.

Best wishes in your new home.

  6. I hate reading slumps! Usually it just takes one great read to snap me out of it. I tend toward comfortable books, authors I've read before or genres I always like. Or re-read an old favorite! It sounds like you've been really busy! Take it easy, I'm sure the reading will fall into place.

  7. When I hit a reading slump I like to read books that are quick and entertaining. Fluffy books. For me that mean young adult fiction (especially sci-fi). It's like comfort food to me. You may want to try graphic novels. Or something light and fluffy like romance. I hope you get over your reading slump soon! I'm sure the more time you find to rest and recuperate from your move the better it will be.

  8. I think this happens to everyone at some point. Unfortunately, I'm not sure how I've come out of my past slumps. It just sort of happens. One day I begin reading something and can't wait to get back to every time I have to stop. Maybe helping at your new library will be good medicine.

  9. I had a major reading slump last year. I was tired of reading fantasy books all the time. So I dove head first into Agatha Christie, and devoured as many murder mysteries that I could :)

Hopefully you will find your way out of the slump soon!

  10. I hate these sorts of slumps!! But it is a great feeling when you come out of it! I just finished The School of Essential Ingredients - it was a beautiful, sweet and pretty quick read. Not sure if it is your sort of book or not but I really loved it.

  11. It happens I think to all of us readers, at least to me. You will get it back

  12. Awww, Freckles is adorable. I'm glad you got all moved in. When I do have a reading slump I just give in to it. I'll keep picking up my book and reading as much as I can and eventually the slump passes and I'm back to my old reading self. I usually take the time to do a bit of knitting which I otherwise ignore.

  13. Hi there,

Thanks for leaving a comment on my blog. Always so exciting when someone new visits!

I hit a brick wall last year too.
I just kept picking checking other people's blogs to see what they were reading and recommending. Sometimes I think it can help to read something quick and easy, just to get moving again.

Have you read People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks? From your reading list, I think it might be one you might enjoy.

(I've also just read The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, which I found quite addictive.)

    Hope that helps!

  14. I agree with Alyce...find a nice, quick fluff book. That usually does the trick for me.

  15. Sometimes I get into a slump as well. I think the only choice is to give it some time and do other things while you wait. Forcing yourself to read may only make it worse, and this way you can get caught up on your other hobbies.

    Btw, adorable kitty!

  16. The excitement/stress of your move and getting settled might be catching up with you ... don't be hard on yourself!

Joining the Friends of the Library was a great idea! You may be among the first to visit the book sale, and you'll be spending time with other book lovers.
