Sunday Salon

I had a great week! You know what I am talking about...everything went smoothly at home and work.  I was happy with the reading I was able to accomplish this week: Mr. Peanut (finished last week of August, but review done this week); You Don't Look Like Anyone I Know  (review here), and I also completed Pillars of the Earth (both book and audio, which I have been reading for several weeks--  hovering around 1,000+pp/32 discs - (no review yet), but I loved it!

It is also a (3) day weekend, here in the US for Labor Day - Monday. The weather is gorgeous and in the high 70's as well. The exercise program is continuing, and some days the bones hurt a bit. I decided i am only going to weigh myself twice a month, as to me after a certain age, the numbers on the scale don't mean much. I prefer to mark my progress by the way the clothes fit! We managed to take a (1) hour walk yesterday, and I got to spend some uninterrupted time reading as well.

Last week was closet cleaning, this week was book shelf cleaning!  I unburdened myself of LOADS of books (82)!!!! Most of these I acquired over the years but never read. It's unlikely, I would read these now, as my taste in books has changed a little from when I bought these. Fortunately, many were bought at library book sales very very cheap, but there were some foolish, full price ones in these stacks as well....sighhhhh.  A few of them I read, but most were never read by me.

My library is having a book sale in November and is the benefactor of ALL of these books.--REMIND ME not to repurchase these titles at that sale...LOL

(22)

LOVED The Story of Edgar Sawtelle and Pillars of the Earth (just finished), but the rest of these are mostly mysteries and thrillers, and while I still enjoy that genre, I have I lot of others I would prefer to read.

(30)
This stack is read and unread ARCs and mostly more mysteries and thrillers. Some of these books (the Nevada Barrs) I bought brand new and paid full price over (5) years ago sadly.  Bet you never did that?

(30)
More mysteries, a few non fiction, and quite a few contemporary fiction in this stack. ALL unread.

I had a few others that were not photographed, but were listed on PBS as they were on someone's wish list - Hope they enjoy them. I feel so much better now! I know there are more to rid myself of before that November book sale, but I'll take a little break.

Stella Luna

While I had a good week, my daughter had a sad one. Her (15) year old cat Stella Luna suffered a stroke on Friday, and when they took her to the Vet, her breathing was labored and the Vet said that the cat needed to be put to sleep, as there was nothing that could be done for her. It was unlikely she would ever recover. Needless to say, she is devastated, as Stella and my daughter go way back together. Stella and Melissa moved from our family home into their first apartment together in 1997 and they have been though many ups and downs of life. Stella, the cat was a special cat, and will be missed. She is being cremated, and although Stella was an indoor only cat, her ashes will be spread at a bird sanctuary -- Melissa thought she'd like that:)

Wishing You a perfect Week!

  1. So sorry to hear about Stella Luna :-( The bird sanctuary sounds like the perfect choice...

82 books! The library could hold a book sale solely with donations from you ;-) Nice work though...I struggle to part with books!

  2. I can imagine the feelings of loss for your daughter. We lost our dog Franky last Tuesday - he was just nine years old. We are trying to come to grips with it - its hard.

  6. Sure wish I could get into that kind of cleaning mood. My entire house needs it :)

I am so sorry to hear about your "grand" kitty. Stella Luna has been a constant companion for many, many years; I know she will be greatly missed.

  7. I got rid of some books a few weeks ago - I took them to the hospital for patients to enjoy. I plan to go through my stacks again soon to take them more.

I'm sorry about Stella Luna. It's so hard to lose a beloved pet.

  8. I recently took a stack of books to the hospital for patients to enjoy and plan to go through my stacks a little better soon. It's a great feeling, isn't it?

I'm so sorry to read about Stella Luna. It's so hard to lose a beloved pet.

  9. I just made a stack yesterday of books that need to go....I have 102so far, but I need to weed further...and yes, I paid full price for some that I never read - and don't really want to anymore. UGH! The question is if I will be wiser in the future.

  10. Ah, I'm sad for Stella Luna...and for Melissa.

    Love your Rainbow arch...very appropriate.

Alas, I know what you mean about TBRs that have been around a long, long time. I still have 116 of the original (166) group, but have added new ones that I've not included in that count. They're in other stacks in my office! In denial, just a bit...lol.

But of the original stacks, some of those go way back about five years, too, as three years ago I moved here with several boxes of them that had been in my old house for a couple of years.

Yes, I paid full price for most of them, too.

I think I'd like to read many of them, but I see some there that make me go "what was I thinking?"

Hope you have a Happy Labor Day.

  15. I'm very sorry to hear about Stella Luna. I know what it is to lose a beloved pet and I really feel for her.

Lovely to have so many books. We have our own share around here. I'm just about to start reading "Sarah's Key" - a friend gave me. I don't really know anything about the story but I believe they're making it into a movie. Thanks so much for stopping. Have a great week.

  16. How sad about the cat! And what a wonderful way to honor her by spreading the ashes at a bird sanctuary. I've been wanting to read Pillars of the Earth for ages - audio might just be the way for me to do it. I'll have to see if our library has it on audio.

  17. I also loved Edgar Sawtelle...and Pillars of the Earth has been on my bookshelf for over a year - it's just so intimidating!

I used to read almost exclusively suspense and thrillers and now rarely do...although Nevada Barr is still a favorite with her books all set in National Parks.

Good for you for cleaning out and clearing clutter!!

    Sue

  18. My mom loves Nevada Barr and has passed along several of them to me. I read one and was not thrilled but I need to read another one before I unburden them all back on her. I'm impressed that you were able to get rid of so many books. I always feel so guilty! But at least they're going to a good cause.

  19. My husband keeps rubbing in how he gets to be home on Monday while I'm slaving away at work. LOL I'll be thinking of everyone who is enjoying an extra day off!

It sounds like you had a great and productive week this past week, Diane. It leaves such a good feeling behind, doesn't it?

I am so sorry about Stella Luna, however. My thoughts are with your daughter.

I hope you have another great week, Diane!

  20. So sorry to hear about Stella. I don't know what I'll do when my Stella the dog dies. She is the sweeeetest!

    A bird sanctuary...love it :)

I've had Edgar Sawtelle on my bookshelf forever. I don't know why I pretend it's not there. Maybe it would be a good fall/winter read.

  21. I am sure your library is thrilled to receive all those books for their sale. I just took a bag full to the local used book store that just opened and is run by a friend and donated my earnings to charity.

I just finished watching The Pillars of the Earth miniseries and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it as I was sure they were going to butcher the book.

I am sorry about Stella Luna. It is so hard to say goodbye to a beloved pet.

  23. Wow! That's a lot of books to be getting rid of, but good for you! I wish that I had that kind of resolve and tenacity when it comes to getting rid of books! Also, I am sorry to heat about Stella Luna. Please pass on my sympathy to your daughter. I know my daughter would be devastated if she lost one of her cats.

  24. Sounds like a wonderful week! I agree with you about the scale. I weigh myself just about everyday as a form of torture... I keep thinking one day I will look down and lose a few pounds (overnight). HA!

I am still stilling on hundreds of books that belong to Barbara and Frank.... I need to find a way to get rid of these, soon!

  25. I am so sorry for the loss your daughter has suffered with the passing of Stella Luna. Some people thing of our furry friends as pets, but animal lovers will tell you these furry babies are truly part of the family, and the loss is always devastating...

As for the book stacks, I also have books (ok, lots) that I've eagerly bought with the anticipation of diving into, only to find that I can't fit it into my reading obligations. I generally shift these books during a big "clean up" from on the current shelves to the book box. One of these days, I will have to go through them and scrutinize whether it's time to donate or actually MAKE THEM FIT into the reading schedule! Nice to know there are others out there with the same "problem"! :-)

  26. Stella was beautiful, please give your daughter a hug from me! I know how hard it is to lose a family member.

You should put a sticker dot on the cover somewhere just to make sure you don't rebuy your old books!! LOL!

  27. 82 books cleaned up and removed from your library? That's impressive!

I am sorry about Stella Luna! My heart goes out to your daughter on her loss.

  28. Sorry to hear about Stella Luna ... sounds like she had a nice long lovely life with your daughter though!

And that is one gigantic stack of books you got there. I know what you mean about your reading tastes changing ... I've gone through phases like that where I realize I've outgrown the types of books that I used to buy.

  29. My sympathies to your daughter, cats make the best of friends and it is so hard when we lose them.
You should be quite proud of the number of books you are cleaning out! Happy Labor day.

  30. I'm so sorry about Stella Luna! I have your daughter in my thoughts.

I'm glad your got to do all those cleanings! I have some major overhauls to do in my apartment too (yeah, I know I just moved in)!

  31. It does sound like you had a good week! Cleaning off the bookshelves, long walk, nice weather, holiday :o)

I'm like you, the numbers on the scale don't mean so much to me anymore. I too go more by the way clothes fit and how I feel.

Sorry to hear your daughter didn't have such a good week. I saw the Rainbow Bridge graphic and knew before even reading. What a lovely kitty she had. I like her name too ... Stella Luna ...

  32. So sorry to hear about Stella :( When I lost my kitty of 17 years it was the same sort of thing. He was with me when I moved out, etc. Aw... hugs to your daughter.

  33. Sorry to hear about Stell Luna!

I need to thin my books out too as I have tons of mysteries I will never read either. I saw you got rid of The Thin Place. That book was just strange....
